Shows Coming Soon... We are proud to announce the following show have been confirmed and will be produced by Napier Operatic Society in the near future. Big hair, big dance moves, and plenty of laughs _ look out Napier, Hairspray is coming to town. Napier Operatic Society is staging the Broadway smash hit at the Napier Municipal Theatre in April 2013. Set in Baltimore in 1962, the main character is Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with a big heart who has a passion for dance. She wins a spot on a local TV dance programme and is transformed into a teen celebrity. But what chance does she have of vanquishing the programme's reigning princess, winning over heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrating the TV show? The production will combine cutting-edge technology, costumes sourced from the Australian productions and an eye-catching set designed by Harold Moot, who worked on Miss Saigon. The society is one of a consortium of seven music theatre organisations in the country who have joined forces to build the set, props and costumes for the show, following on from other collaborations to bring big shows such as 42nd Streetand Cats to these shores. Each production will be staged by local casts and crews, beginning with Wellington Musical Theatre this August. This is the first time Hairspray has been staged in New Zealand. Napier's director, Wendy Revell, went to Christchurch last week with to meet Moot, whose set is in the early stages of production, and brainstorm ideas. ``It has all the makings of a great musical,'' she says, adding that it would be a highly technical, multi-media production that Hawke's Bay audiences are unlikely to have seen before. She plans to hold auditions at the end of October or in November, and begin full rehearsals next January. Revell directed the sold out shows Bad Girls and Dusty the Original Pop Diva for Napier Operatic. Her current project is Chicago, to be staged at the Tabard Theatre in July. ``Wendy is passionate about good theatre. She researches her plays extensively and searches out the best people available to audition. The executive was thrilled she agreed to take on a new challenge with Hairspray,'' society president Sharron Pardoe said. ``Hairspray ticked all the boxes. It has a huge feel-good factor and we think it will appeal to a wide audience.'' Hairspray was originally a 1988 comedy film written and directed by John Waters, starring Ricki Lake, Sonny Bono, Debbie Harry and Divine. In 2002 it was adapted into a Broadway musical, going on to win eight Tony awards in 2003, and finally closing in 2009 after 2642 performances. The show also ran to more than 1000 performances on London's West End, and recently finished professional runs in Sydney and Melbourne. In 2007 the film adaptation starring John Travolta, Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer and Queen Latifah was released, going on to become the fourth highest grossing musical film in US cinema history behind Grease, Chicago and Mamma Mia.
